Now a well-established chain of Tex-Mex restaurants, Torchy’s originally wowed its clientele with its meatless deep-fried avocados and more. But instead of sitting still and opting for cheaper ingredients of the vacuum-packed-and-steamed variety, the company has since grown its variety of tacos to a nearly bewildering extent. In Waco, you’ll find 15 flavors on the menu at Torchy’s from across the country, including catfish from Alabama, green chile pork from Arizona, and of course brisket from right here in Texas, along with rotating monthly specials on both food and drink that will keep you coming back for more long after you’ve tried everything.

Hecho En Waco

Chances are if you’re going after Mexican food, you’re in need of a quick bite on-the-go, or maybe you’re walking in with flip flops and a Jimmy Buffet shirt. Looking to go a little more upscale? Go visit Hecho En Waco, where Chef Guadalupe Leon’s flavors have won a number of awards on the back of their authenticity and regional focus on the center of Mexico. A huge list of tequilas is also available here, giving diners a chance to learn more about the country’s perhaps most-well-known export, and sip on rare varieties unavailable in many other places.

La Fiesta

It’s hard to doubt La Fiesta, which claims to be Waco’s original Tex Mex Restaurant. Opened nearly 60 years ago in 1963, La Fiesta was established on the heels of Antonio Castillo, who opened his famous Aztec Cafe in 1935. Popular among Baylor College students for its dance hall in the back of the restaurant, Aztec operated until 1948, when a revolutionary new “pie” made of Italian ingredients and cheese caught the family’s attention. Castillo and his children took to this innovative new delicacy for nearly 35 years, when his son, Sam, opened La Fiesta in a return to his family’s traditions and roots. It’s a trip in and of itself to see how far this place has come. Stop in for your favorite tacos, burritos, and more, steeped in Waco’s long and rich history!

Taqueria El Crucero

What would this list be without a confident pick for a favorite local taco shop? Taqueria El Crucero gets our vote on account of its low prices, breakfast-and-lunch exclusive hours, and unpretentious menu filled with a rock-solid selection of traditional tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and lots more. You’ll likely find one or two of our staff there over lunch each day, downing Agua De Jamaica (hibiscus tea), pupusas, and gorditas.

Big fan of fajitas? Ninfa’s Mexican Restaurant will be a kind of pilgrimage for you. That’s because Ninfa Rodriguez Lorenzo – Ninfa’s founder and original owner – introduced fajitas to Texas, and by proxy the rest of the world. Period. You read it right: Ninfa’s, right here in Waco, was the first restaurant serving fajitas in the U.S. Not impressive enough? If you’re a big fan of Tex-Mex, you’ll also recognize another of Ninfa’s original delicacies: avocado and tomatillo salsa, served at nearly every other Mexican restaurant in Texas these days. Stop in and try out the origin of what’s nearly a religious symbol for Mexican food enthusiasts – if only to make your friends and family jealous.
